What is an Independent Medical Exam (IME)?
An Independent Medical Exam (IME) is an objective medical evaluation performed by a qualified physician who has no prior treatment relationship with the injured party. IMEs are used in Workers' Compensation, auto injury, and disability claims to establish causation, assess medical necessity, determine maximum medical improvement, evaluate disability ratings, and resolve disputes about diagnosis or treatment. Emperion coordinates IMEs across all 50 states with board-certified specialists in orthopedics, neurology, psychiatry, internal medicine, and 30+ other specialties, delivering comprehensive reports within 10-14 business days.
What is a Peer Review?
A Peer Review is a comprehensive analysis of medical records, treatment plans, and provider recommendations conducted by a physician in the same specialty as the treating doctor. Peer Reviews determine whether treatment is medically necessary, causally related to the claim, consistent with evidence-based guidelines, and appropriate in scope and duration. Emperion's peer review process includes complete treatment record analysis, claimant interviews when appropriate, and consultations with treating providers to ensure thorough, defensible opinions for utilization review, treatment authorization decisions, and case resolution.
What is a Functional Capacity Exam (FCE)?
A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is an objective, performance-based assessment that measures a worker's physical abilities and limitations to determine safe return-to-work capacity. FCEs evaluate lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, sitting, standing, walking, and job-specific tasks, then compare results against the injured worker's actual job requirements. Emperion uses standardized testing protocols performed by licensed occupational therapists and physical therapists to provide physicians, claims adjusters, and employers with data-driven recommendations for full duty, modified duty, or continued disability status.
What is a Fitness for Duty Evaluation (FFD)?
A Fitness for Duty Evaluation (FFD) determines whether an employee can safely perform essential job functions without risk to themselves or others, with or without reasonable accommodations. FFDs are typically requested when an employee returns from extended medical leave, exhibits performance or safety concerns, or works in safety-sensitive positions (transportation, healthcare, public safety). Emperion coordinates FFDs with physicians who review medical history, conduct clinical examinations, assess cognitive and psychological fitness when applicable, and provide employers with clear, legally defensible fitness determinations.
Q: When should I order an IME?
A: Order an IME when you need an independent medical opinion about causation, maximum medical improvement, disability rating, treatment necessity, conflicting medical opinions, or claim closure. IMEs are most effective early in complex claims or when treatment costs exceed expected norms for the injury type.
Q: How long does it take to schedule an IME?
A: Emperion schedules most IMEs within 7-14 days of referral, depending on specialty and geographic location. Rush scheduling is available for urgent claims. Complete reports are delivered within 10-14 business days after the examination.
Q: What's the difference between an IME and a Peer Review?
A: An IME includes a physical examination of the claimant by a physician, while a Peer Review is a records-only analysis without examining the patient. Use IMEs when physical examination findings are needed; use Peer Reviews for treatment authorization decisions or when low policy limits make in-person exams cost-prohibitive.
Q: Are Emperion's services available nationwide?
A: Emperion operates in all 50 states, coordinating services through 25,000+ credentialed providers and six regional service centers. Services include IME, Peer Review, FCE, and Fitness for Duty (FFD) evaluations nationwide.
Q: Is Emperion URAC-accredited?
A: Yes, Emperion maintains URAC accreditation for Independent Medical Examinations (IME v2.0) and SOC 2 Type II compliance, ensuring quality standards, provider credentialing, conflict-of-interest screening, and data security meet industry-leading benchmarks.
Q: What medical specialties does Emperion cover?
